Thoughts & Musings

First Up…

Announcing our first UpStage play, set to open in early October.

Enron is a highly theatrical and darkly exhilarating tale of the corporate crime that defined the end of the twentieth century.

A cross between insightful analysis and savage satire, this unique business ‘thriller’ dazzles the eye and tickles the brain as it moves gracefully between black comedy and classical tragedy.

This terrific play first appeared in London in 2008, where acting company member Tom Roberts saw it and flew back, script in hand, to encourage me to produce it.

The script remained on my short list for the last few years until the time seemed right.  The mash-up of high finance and low comedy, the chance to laugh and learn simultaneously, proved irresistible.

And the technical challenges excited me too.

Every so often, a production comes along that requires a scenic designer and director to collaborate fully and equally from the start.  Enron is that kind of play.  Resident Designer Trevor Elliot and I have been putting our heads together for the last few months to address the many practical and aesthetic challenges of the play.

I think it’s a very strong way to kick off our new season.  It’s a perfect “first shot” of the smart, sophisticated and savvy season that lies ahead.

So that’s #1.  Expect #2 in your email box tomorrow.

Best,
Ed

And Then There Were None

UpStage in Rep / Now thru August 31
A mysterious host brings an unlikely group of guests to a remote island where, one by one, they start to die. Who’s the killer? Who’s the next victim? Following the success of last summer’s Mousetrap, we thought we’d invite you to enjoy another murderously entertaining whodunit.

Hay Fever

UpStage in Rep / Now thru August 29
This classic comedy introduces us to the uber- bohemian Bliss family: the father, a famous writer; the mother, a renowned actress, and two equally eccentric children. Each invites a friend to their summer home where the hosts foist each guest off on a different family member, with alarmingly delightful results.

Sylvia

DownStage / Returning Sept. 4 thru 14It’s back!  A modern romantic comedy about a marriage and a dog. Dramatic literature is stuffed with memorable love scenes, but none is as immediately delicious, dizzy and howlingly funny as the one that begins the redeeming affair in this clever and endearing comedy. In fact, you might just want to take it home with you.
