Ed Shea, Artistic Director at 2nd Story Theatre

First some sad news:

The day after I sent an email to announce Barbara Meek would play the lead in Trip to Bountiful (and the day before the rehearsals were to commence!), Ms. Meek called with the unfortunate news that, for personal reasons, she had to pull out of the project. After months of planning and preparation, this was indeed a disappointment.

We wish her the best of health.

Now for some happy news: The show will go on! And with the usual talented 2nd Story cast.

Trip to Bountiful is a play I have always wanted to produce. Especially at this time of year. It perfectly captures the spirit of the season. And it will familiarize Rhode Island audiences with a great American playwright, Horton Foote.

For the past few seasons, I tried in vain to get the rights to produce this beloved classic, only to be turned down again and again. But now that it has finished a wildly successful Broadway run, we have been given the green-light to present it here, at 2nd Story.

A true gift. For you. And for us.

I’ve assembled a strong, pitch-perfect cast, and a gifted team of designers to make this a very special production indeed.

A perfect holiday event to share with those you love.

Tickets are on sale now.

Join us on a Trip to Bountiful this season. You’ll be glad you did.

UpStage / Now thru Nov. 2

A highly theatrical and darkly exhilarating tale of the corporate crime that defined the end of the twentieth century. A cross between insightful analysis and savage satire, this unique business ‘thriller’ dazzles the eye and tickles the brain as it moves gracefully between black comedy and classical tragedy.

DownStage / Now thru Nov. 23

An extraordinary play. Funny, perceptive, eloquent and familiar. This masterful work examines the subtle and often perilous relationship between three remarkable women: a young girl, her mother, and her grandmother. Carefully and lovingly wrought, it reminds us what it truly means to give.
