Our final show of the 2014-15 season is Alan Ayckbourn’s Time of My Life.
We love Ackbourn around here. Comic Potential (the play about the android actors) and Communicating Doors (the time traveling murder mystery) were two of our most popular plays.
Ayckbourn always has a gimmick. And his gimmicks always pay off.
Time of My Life is no exception.
Starting with a family birthday dinner, this cunningly simple yet theatrically complex story moves forward and backward in time as we watch events of the past interweave with those of the future, without losing sight of the present. The structure is ingenious, the humor infectious and the concept truly unique.
Here are a few raves from the London premiere:
“A play by an inspired master craftsman cum psychologist working at full stretch: harsh and funny, simple and cunning, generous but unforgiving.”
– London Sunday Times
“Funny, very funny, and not at all funny; quintessentially Ayckbourn.”
– London Times
“Immensely subtle, ingenious.”
No playwright keeps actors, directors, designers and audiences on their toes quite the way Ayckbourn does. He demands a lot from all of us.
But the rewards, if we let ourselves go where he takes us, are great indeed.
So that’s it. All 8 plays.
A terrific season, if I do say so myself.
