As Ye Sow….

While Nicky Silver’s ferocious comedy, The Lyons, roared open DownStage this weekend, UpStage, George M Cohan’s wild and wooly Seven Keys to Baldpate prepared for previews.

It’s a magical play. And a haunting one for me.

Forty years ago, while a junior at Portsmouth High School, I was bused to Providence to attend a Project Discovery matinee of Badlpate.

I was transfixed, transported and, although I didn’t know it at the time, transformed.

That fateful morning sparked my still-blazing passion for the theatre.

So, next time you enter 2nd Story Theatre, say a quiet thank you to Providence’s George M Cohan, the great Adrian Hall and, of course, the late Marion Simon who spearheaded Trinity Rep’s still-thriving Project Discovery.

The seeds of 2nd Story were sown by them.

Best,
Ed
